Scoring the future of baseball with real-time digital precision
MLB continued to build on the success of their electric Home Run Derby X with a new scoring system that stepped up to the plate for both their fans and teams. Designed to match the fast-paced action of the sport, the system tracks every hit, updates scores in real time, and integrates seamlessly with stadium and broadcast infrastructure.

Following the successful design and release of MLB’s exciting new short-form baseball format Home Run Derby X, Imagination were tasked with creating a dynamic new scoring system to match the fast-paced action of the new sport.

THE OUTCOME
An All Star debut
Launching at MLB All-Star Week in Atlanta – the first of seven events in the 2025 season – the scoring system was designed to be integrated into existing ballpark infrastructure, allowing for scoreboards, game summary and player performance content to be displayed on stage and stadium screens as part of the wider game presentation.
Plug-and-play
Comprising a simple kit of parts, the new system allows the setup of teams, players and games, with a custom LED keyboard for umpires to record hit results directly from the field of play. Player performance data is also recorded throughout the events, feeding into the commentary teams during gameplay, and providing a record of results for the wider MLB media team post-event.
Imagination has been at the core of developing the Home Run Derby X format and program since its inception in 2017. This latest project aimed to deliver a simple, flexible, and transferable scoring system that allows MLB to scale HRDX to more venues, more frequently. As always, the planning, development, review, and execution of the project were seamless. The team’s deep knowledge of the sporting format provides an invaluable foundation, but it is their passion, diligence, and proactive approach to problem-solving that truly set them apart. Despite the tight timeline, they delivered an exemplary product and service.

The scoring system puts fans at the heart of the action. With thousands of spectators at each event, the system had to communicate real-time results, player stats and game updates on both stadium screens and a custom LED-clad stage, making every hit and home run part of the shared experience.
