In this series, we ask Imagination talent all about the experiences that have made them who they are. This month we spoke to Jamie Shilvock, Real-time Technical Lead from our London studio.

A bit about me…

I like all forms of art, I like all forms of technology. I love anything that bridges the gap between.

A creative experience that influenced me the most…

I think watching Enter the Void at 15 really shifted my whole perspective on what creativity could be, more than anything since.

My Industry hero is…

Bior Elliott. Art Editor at Dazed and Art Director of S-EIN. A very close friend and an endless source of inspiration.

The piece of work I’m most proud of…

I have a close group of friends that all work in various niches across the broader creative field. Whenever we work together on projects it’s super rewarding. There often isn’t much money in it but just the act of getting together and having full creative freedom to do outlandish stuff more than makes up for it.

The piece of work that makes me cringe…

This may be a bit of an extreme position – but I feel that everything you do should eventually make you cringe. It means you’re growing as a person and constantly having new thoughts and ideas. Stagnation is awful for creativity.

The experience I wish I had created…

Pad Thai, later renamed untitled (free/still), by Rirkrit Tiravanija. A Trailblazer of the Relational Art movement of the 1990s, he challenged the established ideas about what art was and how it was valued, critiquing the art world’s capitalist tendencies and the monetary value placed on art and physical objects.

‘The viewers became active participants, first locating the backrooms, then consuming the food and engaging in conversations with the artist and one another, instead of quietly looking at objects in an exhibition space’.

Advice to your 18 year old self…

Don’t let anyone put you in a box. Be brave and be unapologetically yourself.

What’s next?

We’re currently using Unreal Engine 5 to develop a whole host of upcoming interactive applications for a wide variety of different clients. Unfortunately everything is confidential but I’m excited for the upcoming launches!
