ABOUT THE PROJECT
Designing an immersive museum visitor experience that promotes racing culture for the city
Working closely with the Macao Government Tourism Office, we designed an end-to-end connected museum with 15 interactive experiences that allowed visitors to experience the thrill of being a motorsports driver while learning about the cultural heritage of Grand Prix racing. From the museum’s visual identity to the user journey and back-end systems, we purposefully designed a museum experience that was high-impact, content-rich, and edu-tainment focused.
CHALLENGE
As part of a strategy to transform Macao into a family-focused tourist destination, the Macao Grand Prix Museum needed to serve as a cornerstone attraction. The Macao Government Tourism Office asked Imagination to conceptualise and design a permanent brand home that broke away from traditional exhibitions and elevated the history of racing in Macao, while appealing to both racing fans and new visitors. We needed to translate the energy, noise, and emotion of a live Grand Prix into a permanent interactive environment.

THE OUTCOME
Designing a connected visitor experience
From early concepts, we designed a connected journey where visitors created a personal race profile recognised throughout the museum. Guests matched their performance against the venue’s leaderboard, giving them a clear reason to return and improve their high score. We also developed a visual identity inspired by the track itself. This design system extended across historical displays of the Macau Grand Prix, deconstructed vehicular exhibits, and interactive interfaces like driver avatar creation and competitive immersive racing.
Immersing guests in real-life racing challenges
Interactive installations brought the physical demands of racing to life and gave visitors hands-on experience with key behind-the-scenes race roles. In the Pit Garage exhibit, guests joined the F3 pit crew to race against the clock and swap out tyres during sudden weather shifts. In Race Operations, visitors stepped into the role of a flag marshal along the Guia Circuit, testing their flag knowledge to quickly communicate safety signals to drivers competing at top speeds. In the Driving Strength Test, visitors held tight to a physical steering wheel on a virtual replica of the Macau track, experiencing the force needed to maintain alignment through steep curves and high speeds.
Powering decisions with experience analytics
We implemented an Experience Analytics system integrated with visitor registration and interactive exhibits to measure performance and guide operational planning. The tool captured engagement levels across three formats: an always-on dashboard tracking visitor data and exhibit performance, monthly email reports highlighting key data, and an annual summary presentation with strategic insights and enhancement opportunities. This system equipped our clients with data to evolve the museum experience and manage daily operations like traffic flow.
VALUE
For the audience
Visitors enjoyed a connected, hands-on journey that combined education and entertainment. By building a personal race profile, testing their skills on interactive exhibits, and competing on live leaderboards, guests experienced the physical thrill of motorsports while discovering Macao’s racing heritage.
For the brand
The Macao Government Tourism Office established a cornerstone three-story attraction to support its strategy to build a family-focused tourist destination. Supported by a track-inspired visual identity and a custom Experience Analytics system, the museum used live data and recurring reports to optimise daily operations, refine guest experiences, and encourage repeat visits.
